La Luz - Sandia Crest Trail

La Luz is a fantastic trail that takes one from the base of the Sandia Mountains ( 7,036 ft) all the way to the top (10,600ft) for an elevation gain of about 3800 ft over 15 miles. Except for the first few miles the trail is mostly shaded, passing large granite walls and high altitude spruce and fir trees. The degree of vegetation change over the hike is indeed surprising.

The hike is strenuous and can be uncomfortably hot in the summer months, particularly during June, July and August. If you are planning to hike the trail at this time, try to get on the trail early in the morning. As much as a twenty to thirty degree temperature difference can expected from the trail head at the base to the summit of Sandia Crest. Plan to take about 3 quarts of water and allot 4 to 5 hours to get up. One great option is to hike up and take the Tramway down, or visa versa.
